A Histochemical Study of Postmenopausal Fallopian Tubes

Abstract
A histochemical study on the postmenopausal fallopian tubes was carried out in order to observe the postmenopausal changes of a few meterials and enzymes and compare with the cyclic changes of the normal fallopian tubes. Nine tubal specimens were obtained from laparotomy cases without any salpingeal disease. Two pieces of the tube, one from the isthmic and the other from the ampullar portion, were used in this study in order to find out any difference between them. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. The mean age of these postmenopausal cases was 56.3 years and the most frequent laparotomy indication of these cases was chronic cervicitis with cervical erosion. 2. Fat was identified in slight to mild degree in the cytoplasms of the tubal epithelial cells. And fat content in muscle tissue was slight, but negative in the stroma and blood vessel endothelium. 3. Glycogen was seen as granule forms in the perinuclear region of the tubal epithelium, the content of which was mild. And the stromal and muscular glycogen content was mild, too. 4. Diastase resistant periodic acid Schiff reactive material was scattered mildly in the apical parts of the secretory cells of the tubal epithelium. But the contents in the basement membrane, stroma and muscle tissue were moderate to marked. 5. Mucin was not identified in the salpingeal tissue except slight amount in the apical portion of the epithelium. 6. Alkaline phosphatase activity was identified along the apical portion of the secretory cells in the tubal epithelium. The staining intensity of the above portion was slight, but moderate in the capillary and arteriole endothelium. 7. Acid phosphatase activity was observed in the whole cytoplasm of the tubal epithelial cells with diffuse and granular forms. The enzyme activity of the epithelium was mild in the apical portion and trace in the basal portion. 8. Beta-glucuronidase activity was mild in the apical portion of the tubal epithelium, but trace in the basal portion of it and blood vessel
